Hafliði Kristinsson, Marriage and family therapist: Finding a solution through an argument - important factors in a happy marriage. Theories developed by John Gottman. The Lecture on Saturday afternoon.

1) Love maps – the importance of knowledge in building a sound marriage. Gathering knowledge is a lifelong process. Stressful periods and times of changes require gathering of new information. These maps hold details about your partner´s life history, daily routines, likes and dislikes.

2) Criticism is a destructive tool in an argument. ´´All you ever do is work.‘‘ Complaining is the antidote to criticism. Let´s attack the problem, not the person. In every argument there is an element of longing. Do we recognize the longing or do we prepare our defenses? Defensiveness breeds contempt, and contempt creates stonewalling.

3) Social skills in regulating conflict:

a. Soften the startup – Research shows that the way you start your conversation makes a big difference in the overall quality of your marriage. Harsh start-up, beginning with criticism or contempt, makes partner react defensively and withdraw, thus creating emotional distance.

b. Accept influence – Those who allow themselves to be influenced by their partner stop creating obstacles for each other and learn to compromise. You become more powerful by sharing your powers with others

c. Learn to self-sooth – Learn to calm yourself. Emotional flooding makes you unable to carry on a well structured conversation in an argument .

d. Learn to repair and de-escalate – This is an effort to de-escalate negative feelings during a difficult encounter. A repair can be an apology, a smile, or bit of humor that breaks the tension and helps you both feel more relaxed.

e. Compromise – seek to find a solution – work towards a compromise.

4) Bids for connection – we are all seeking emotional closeness – Close relationships consist of series of ‘‘emotional bids‘‘ – that is your partner reaches out for emotional connection with a comment, a question, a smile, or a hug. You can choose to:

a. turn away – ignoring the bid

b. turn against – reacting with anger or hostility

c. turn toward – showing you´re open, listening and engaged.

1) Vegakort ástarinnar – mikilvægi þekkingar í uppbyggingu góðra sambanda. Söfnun upplýsinga er ævilangt ferli. Tímabil breytinga og mikillar streitu krefjast þess að við söfnum nýjum, mikilvægum upplýsingum. Þessi vegakort innihalda mikilvægar upplýsingar um sögu maka þíns, dagleg viðfangsefni og það sem makanum líkar vel eða illa.

2) Gagnrýni er eyðandi afl í ágreiningi. ,,Það eina sem þú sinnir vel er vinnan.‘‘ Að gera athugasemd er móteitur við gagnrýni. Við skulum ráðast á vandann, ekki einstaklinginn. Sérhver ágreiningur hefur að geyma löngun eða þrá til breytinga. Getum við fundið hver þessi löngun er eða bregðumst við til varna? Vörnin elur af sér óvild, og óvildin byggir múra.

3) Hæfileikar í samskiptum sem stýra ágreiningi í rétta átt :

a. Mýktu aðhlaupið – Rannsóknir sýna að leiðin sem þú velur í upphafi samtals getur skipt sköpum varðandi velferð sambandsins. Harkalegt aðhlaup, gagnrýni eða óvild í upphafi samtals, kallar fram vörn hjá makanum og hann/hún dregur sig til baka, og þannig skapast tilfinningaleg fjarlægð.

b. Leyfðu makanum að hafa áhrif á þig – Þeir sem leyfa makanum að hafa áhrif á sig fækka hindrunum í samskiptum og læra að miðla málum. Þú eykur völd þín með því að deila völdum með öðrum.

c. Lærðu að sefa sjálfa(n) þig. – Lærðu að róa þig niður. Tilfinningaflóð kemur í veg fyrir uppbyggjandi og árangursríkar samræður í spennu ágreinings .

d. Lærðu að gera við og minnka þrýsting - Það er mikilvægt að lægja spennuna og að vinna í neikvæðum tilfinningum á meðan á rifrildi stendur. Viðgerðin getur verið falin í afsökunarbeiðni, brosi, eða fyndinni athugasemd sem losar spennuna og hjálpar báðum að slaka á.

e. Málamiðlun– reyndu að finna lausn – stefndu á málamiðlun.

4) Beiðni um tengingu – við leitum öll eftir tilfinningalegri nálægð – Náin sambönd verða til þegar reglulegar beiðnir um tengingu berast maka á milli – Makinn leitar eftir tilfinningalegri tengingu með athugasemd, spurningu, brosi, eða faðmlagi. Þú getur valið að:

a. snúa þér undan makanum – hafna beiðninni

b. snúast í gegn makanum – bregðast við í reiði eða harkalega

c. snúa þér að makanum – opna þig, hlusta og taka virkan þátt.

Abstract: All marriages experience situations where the need for forgiveness arises, whether it is simply over unfortunate mistake, like forgetting our spouse birthday, or due to a serious transgression, like extramarital affair. It is unfailingly very painful to be hurt by someone you love and forgiveness will sometimes not be straightforward or an easy task. Fortunately, most of the wounds we experience in the marriage relationships, though, are not serious offenses. If we are going to be able to move ahead in a healthy manner, we need to forgive our spouse in order to keep our marriage strong.

The talk highlights the debilitating effects of unforgiveness, discuss and explain what forgiveness entails and what not. I will then proceed to the psychology of forgiveness and relate to the step by step process of forgiveness. Practical and usable strategies will be presented that can hopefully secure enhanced insights into how you can make you marriage relationship even better.

Úrdráttur: Í öllum hjónaböndum koma upp kringumstæður þar sem fyrirgefningar er þörf vegna minniháttar en óheppilegra mistaka, til dæmis ef við höfum gleymt afmælisdegi maka okkar, eða þegar um er að ræða mjög alvarlegt brot, en framhjáhald er gott dæmi um slíkt. Það er ævinlega mjög sársaukafullt að upplifa særindi, sem stofnað hefur verið til af þeim sem við elskum og fyrirgefning getur, oftar en ekki, verið mjög vandasamt og erfitt ferli. En sem betur fer þá eru flest ,sárin‘ sem til er stofnað af hendi maka okkar ekki alvarleg brot. Til þess að við getum viðhaldið góðu, sterku og heilbrigðu hjónabandi þá þurfum við að geta fyrirgefið.

Ég mun koma víða við. Fyrst er til að telja útlistun á eyðileggjandi afleiðingum þess að fyrirgefa ekki. Ég ræði því næst um, og útskýri, hvað fyrirgefning felur í sér og hvað ekki. Ég mun síðan beina sjónum að sálfræði fyrirgefningarinnar og leitast við, skref fyrir skref, að útlista ferli fyrirgefningar. Hagnýtar aðferðir í þágu fyrirgefningarferlisins verða samtímis kynntar til sögunnar. Ég vænti þess að þetta innlegg mitt um fyrirgefninguna verði til þess að efla innsæi og þekkingu okkar á hvernig við getum gert gott hjónaband ennþá betra.

Stóragil-Stórihellir

A guided tour to Stóri hellir (Big Cave) in Stóragil (Great Canyon) on Saturday morning.

The “Stóri hellir” is a climbable two-store cave. In the cliffs of Stóragil is a nesting colony for the bird The Northern Fulmar. It is the only nesting colony in Iceland so far inland. From the Camping Site in Laugarvatn is a 15-20 minutes easy walk to the big cave. It is better to have good walking shoes for the trip.

There are several caves in the small canyon and below the caves is a rowans (or mountain-ashes) tree that is call “The Engagement Tree”.

As the story tells, the tree has a hex so that if anyone would take a leaf or a branch of the tree it would be either a blessing or a curse. Since nobody knows which of the two branches has the blessing or the curse, it has never been tried.

Gísli & Árný, have arranged for a bus from the airport directly to Laugarvatn for couples taking part in the ILME Family reunion arriving at Keflavik arport in the afternoon on Friday June 25th. The bus will depart from Keflavik airport after the arrival of Flight FI343 from Helsinki at approx. 16:30 local time. The cost of this bus is 20 euros pr. person (10 euros for children). The fare is to be paid directly to the busdriver.

They have also arranged for a bus from "BSI Bus Terminal"in Reykjavik to Laugarvatn for couples taking part in the ILME Family reunion. This bus will depart from the bus terminal at 14:30 local time Friday June 25th. The cost of this bus will be approx. 15 euros pr. person. (Approx. half price for children). The price is depending on how many will take the bus, so we can not give you the exact price now. The fare is to be paid directly to the busdriver in euros, dollars or Icelandic kr.

As it is very important for us to know how many people are taking these busses, we are kindly asking you to inform us, as soon as possible, whether you are planning to use one of them or are having other traveling plans to the Reunion.

Saturday night, gathering!

It is traditional on Family Reunions that couples from various countries participate in the Saturday night event. It could be a song, play, quiz, storytelling or something else J Something you can do and you think we all can enjoy. This time the theme of the Family Reunion is to build a bridge between people to a new world. We are going to entertain each other and ourselves this light midsummer night in Iceland 2010.

As usual, we seek to create a warm and loving atmosphere throughout the weekend. We trust that you all contribute to this task in every way you can.

The Evening ceremony starts at 8.30pm and after the gathering, we will have an “Icelandic country dance” after 10.30pm – dancing and enjoying ourselves into the night.

Annað hvert ár eru haldin alþjóðleg fjölskyldumót á vegum hjónahelgarinnar, oftast yfir eina helgi.

Næsta fjölskyldumót Lúthersku hjónahelgarinnar verður haldið árið 2010 og þá verður það haldið á Íslandi.
Staðurinn er Laugarvatn og dagsetningin er síðasta helgin í júní, það er að segja dagana 25. – 27. júní 2010.

Auk þess að vera fallegur staður í skreppifæri við höfuðborgarsvæðið, Þingvelli, Gullfoss og Geysissvæðið, býður Laugarvatn upp á alla nauðsynlega þjónustu fyrir samkomu af þessu tagi; aðstöðu fyrir tjöld, felli- og hjólhýsi, gistingu, fæði, sundlaug og baðaðstöðu, þar á meðal gufubað, góða sali, náttúrufegurð, gönguslóðir og ótalmargt fleira. Í fáum orðum sagt er þar frábær aðstaða fyrir fjölskyldur til að koma saman, eiga góðar stundir, rækta vináttuna, eignast nýja vini og búa til góðar endurminningar.

Við væntum umtalsverðs fjölda gesta frá hinum Norðurlöndunum og Ameríku og vonandi enn fleiri íslenskra fjölskyldna. Við sláum saman sumarmóti LH og alþjóðlega mótinu og biðjum ykkur öll að taka helgina frá og krossa við í dagatalinu.

Svona mót verður ekki hrist fram úr erminni, það þarf margar góða meðlimi okkar stóru fjölskyldu til að standa að þessu svo vel sé.

Við þurfum meðal annars gistivini, fjölskyldur sem geta hýst útlendar fjölskyldur og fólk í alls kyns störf; bæði við skipulagningu, undirbúning og framkvæmd.

Þegar eru komin hjón í undirbúning við skipulagningu og hótel/veitingar en við þurfum miklu fleiri og þau sem vilja bjóða fram aðstoð við mótið eru beðin að hafa samband við umsjónarhjón fjölskyldumótsins, Gunnar og Þóru.
Vinsamlega skoðið síðuna aftur fljótlega, því við munum bæta við upplýsingum fljótlega.

Pohjoisen viileää hehkua Islannin kesässä 2010.

Seuraava kansainvälinen Mennään Eteenpäin –kesätapahtuma järjestetään kesäkuun viimeisenä viikonloppuna Laugarvatnissa (lausutaan löigarvatn) etelä-Islannissa.

Laugarvatn on kaunis ja monipuolisia mahdollisuuksia tarjoava alue vain puolentoista tunnin matkan päässä Reykjavikistä.

Aivan tapahtumapaikan lähellä ovat muiden muassa Þingvellir (lausutaan thingvetlir) – maailman vanhin parlamentti, Gullfoss – kultainen putous ja Geysir – suihkuava kuuma lähde, joka on antanut nimensä maailman kaikille muillekin samanlaisille kuumille lähteille.

Laugarvatnissa on useita eri tasoisia majoitusvaihtoehtoja, hyvätasoisesta hotellista luonnonläheiseen telttailuun. Uima-allas, ulkoilmakylpylä, ympäristön kävelyreitit ja itse vaikuttava maisema antavat nekin oman lisänsä yhteiseen kokemukseen.

Marriage Encounter – Family Reunion in Iceland June 25-27. 2010

The next Marriage Encounter Family Reunion will be at Laugarvatn in the south part of Iceland on the last weekend of June.

Laugarvatn is a beautiful place, one and a half hour drive from Reykjavík, the capital city.

Þingvellir (the oldest parliament in the world), Gullfoss (the “golden” waterfall) and Geysir (a word the world knows for the phenomenon) are all within close range of our location for the Family Reunion.

At Laugarvatn is a hotel and very nice accommodations to choose from. Swimmingpool, out-door bathing, hiking trails and the beautiful surroundings, all add to the great experience of the Reunion.
